Greenville, S.C., Nov. 17, 2015 - For the second straight year, BFGoodrich Tires is positioned to sweep the SCORe desert-racing season, as the iconic tire for off-road enthusiasts seeks its 27th overall win in the SCORe Baja 1000 race that begins later this week.
The 48th running of the Bud Light SCORe Baja 1000 marks the longest desert race of the season and presents an opportunity for BFGoodrich® Tires to continue an unmatched winning streak. BFGoodrich has equipped the top overall finisher at every stop on the SCORe International desert race schedule this season.
The course for this year comprises a loop of approximately 840 miles beginning and ending in ensenada, Baja California, and crossing the unforgiving terrain of Baja. This year's field features a total of 250 racers in all categories. Here are a few key storylines to watch at this year's Baja 1000:
- BFGoodrich has 26 overall wins at SCORe Baja 1000 and 85 total wins on the Baja peninsula.
- BFGoodrich Tires has captured every overall win on the 2015 SCORe desert race schedule. Since last year, BFGoodrich Tires has won nine consecutive SCORe-sanctioned races.
- BFGoodrich Tires has claimed the overall win in 19 of the last 20 major North American desert races.
- BFGoodrich Tires boasts the most class wins of any tire manufacturer — 11 at the 2015 SCORe Baja 500 and 13 at 2014 SCORe Baja 1000
- Gustavo Vildosola Jr. leads the 2015 SCORe World Desert Championship Points with two wins on the season, heading a contingent of seven of the top 10 drivers in the standings on BFGoodrich Tires.
We are in a position to make history in Baja once again," said Peter Calhoun, motorsports manager, BFGoodrich Tires. "Thanks to the contributions of our tremendous racers and race tire engineers, we have an opportunity to claim a second consecutive season sweep of the SCORe season. That's why more racers and enthusiasts choose our products than any other.
Our KR2 race tire has dominated the desert since its introduction in 2013, with 17 overall race wins and dozens of class wins. Baja is our playground for serious business. We play to win. And we've won and helped racers finish at a record pace over the past few years. BFGoodrich Tires have been strapped on more than 70 percent of the top finishers and 75 total class wins over the past two years. We are eager to continue that success," Calhoun said.
Four Decades of Heritage in Baja
In 1975, a group of BFGoodrich Tires engineers went to the Baja peninsula with an experimental tire to determine if it could stand the test of the most grueling off-road challenge. One year later, the newly launched BFGoodrich Radial All-Terrain T/A tire was unleashed in Baja, and BFGoodrich had discovered the Baja peninsula as a proving grounds and laboratory for its tires. The results of those tests and the next year's entry to Baja desert racing led to an unrivalled off-road motorsports program.
BFGoodrich - The Tire of Choice
BFGoodrich once again boasts the most tire fitments among the four-wheel vehicle classes using specialty race tires like the BFGoodrich® Baja T/A®,, BFGoodrich® Baja T/A®KR and BFGoodrich® Baja T/A®KR2. Beyond these race tires, many race classes depend on the durability and toughness of BFGoodrich street tires to endure the Baja terrain, including the BFGoodrich® Mud-Terrain T/A®KM2 and the new BFGoodrich® All-Terrain T/A® KO2.
BFGoodrich Tires introduced the latest in desert race tire technology in 2013 with the BFGoodrich Tires Baja T/A® KR2. Since then, the tire has been adopted by race teams in various classes and has amassed 17 overall desert race wins.
The KR2 tire was originally designed for the Trophy Truck class; however, due to performance demand in other classes, the tire was tuned to provide a solution for several classes.
BFGoodrich Performance Team Baja Challenge Buggy Team
BFGoodrich's firepower heading into this year's race, once again, includes an entry in the Baja Challenge (BC) class.
Led by team captain and former overall Baja 1000 champion Bob Bower, the remaining members include BFGoodrich Performance Team members Kyle Tucker, Brad Lovell, Bill Weber, Brian Finch and Rich Minga. The BFGoodrich Tires Baja Challenge teams will be among many teams riding on BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A® KO2 tires.
